The Diploma Course in Community Health (DCH) was started by AMREF in 1987 in conjunction with McMaster University of Canada and is currently accredited to Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya. The course seeks to empower health and health-related professional to become change agents for health and development in Africa. Since 1987, the students of the course have come from all over Africa. Upon course completion the graduates are expected to provide leadership in planning and management of health services and programmes, especially at district and community levels. 

The e-learning DCH programme will take 18 months and will cover 40 units, which are distributed within three (3) terms. The programme is competence based, and the courses are organized in a logical, sequential order to facilitate the process of learning. The students will be required to undertake an elective course and a research project, which will require close supervision by experienced practitioners and researchers. Computer skills and access to a computer is a prerequisite in this course.

Welcome to our eLearning course on monitoring and evaluation. As you are well aware, as a Manager you are expected to measure progress and demonstrate the impact of your projects or programmes. Faced with a variety of tools and methods, it can sometimes be quite a challenge to identify the appropriate ones that can provide appropriate results. It is our hope that after going through this course you will acquire the competencies needed to measure and assess the performance of your project for effective management of results (outputs and outcomes).

The main objective of this course is to equip you with competencies to improve performance and assess results in your projects. It is  designed for middle and senior level health and development workers in government institutions, the private sector and non-governmental organisations.

The course has  5 modules and should take you a  minimum of 4 months to complete. The modules follow sequentially and place heavy emphasis on the integration of practice and theory.  This approach ensures that  your learning is individualised and meaningful, in the context of your practice. So make sure you complete all the activities and assignments given in the modules before you proceed from one to the next. The assignments are marked by eTutors who also provide you with tutorial advice and support through email and discussion forums. In addition, you will also be able to meet with fellow students online and chat about your course experiences. Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a certificate of completion.

A quarter a century since the identification of the first cases of HIV infection in Eastern and Central Africa, HIV/AIDS remains the eminent health crisis in the region. The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has brought hope to those infected with HIV. However, despite the introduction and availability of effective life-prolonging intervention, such as HAART, many more infected people wait to be reached. The reasons for this are many, but one important one is that many healthcare providers have not been well equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to deliver effective HIV treatment, care and support. The main objective of this course is therefore to equip healthcare personnel in primary care settings to deliver effective holistic HIV treatment, care and support. A typical healthcare worker in a primary care environment in the region will be working in the delivery room in the morning, at the MCH in the mid-morning and finish off at the Out Patient Department in the afternoon. The approach of this curriculum is to equip such a health worker with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to provide a standard package of care to those seeking care AMREF has been providing Continuing Professional Development courses for health workers for the last 50 years, as a means to address performance gaps among health providers. A variety of training approaches have been used to provide CPD, of which elearning is one of them. elearning allows one to study as they continue to provide vital health services to their clients.It provides one with an opportunity to improve their competence and thus provide quality care.
